JibberJobber Featured in NYC News

JibberJobber Featured in NYC News JibberJobber was recently featured on channel 4, NBC primetime news in New York City! How cool is that? Sree Sreenivasan does a regular tech spotlight in this article youll notice that they did not go in alphabetical order and listed JibberJobber as first (first!!), even before superstars in the employment space like LinkedIn (maybe someone at LinkedIn should write a book called Im on JibberJobber Now What??? :p) and SimplyHired. Other interesting points: The name JibberJobber Ive heard a handful of times over the last 18 months from people that dont like the name JibberJobber. But every time I hear it on a podcast, or radio, and now TV, people always talk about it. I *love* how the reporter doesnt miss the opportunity to say that she loves the name (Thanks Tige, for the name!) The focus from Sree it was so interesting to me that Sree focused on the resume aspect of JibberJobber. When I talk about JibberJobber I might say and use it to track where you send your resumes but I usually dont go on from there. I focus on overall relationship management as well as tracking target companies, which are two things that you do whether you are in a job search or not. Building on that idea, it amazes me when someone gives a huge compliment on something that I thought was a cute addition, but not the core of the product like the simple expense tracker. The more I do the webinars (the next one is tomorrow morning, come if you can!) the more I realize how big JibberJobber really is. Really fun website Sree says JibberJobber dot com is a really fun website and its really nice and easy to use. These are two other things that I dont really talk about, but it sure sounds good to me What they chose to show Even with just about 10 seconds of talking about it, and only showing screens that are not part of the logged in section, there were over a hundred signups from New York and New Jersey hope this helps in your job search! In the video they didnt mention LinkedIn but they did mention MyAmiko and Alumwire. The video looks like it wraps up with SimplyHired so how did LinkedIn make it on the writeup? Here is a link to the video, or click on the image below: Thanks for highlighting us, Sree! The Importance of a Placement Work Experience University of Manchester Careers Blog

The Importance of a Placement Work Experience University of Manchester Careers Blog Guest Blogger Post Belinda Mbuthia, Health Check Analyst UKI Systems Currency Team, IBM University of Manchester Student. Hard to believe that it was just the other day that I was wondering what scheme to apply for, what company or even whether I should take the year out to get some work experience. Now almost half-way through with my placement at IBM and I can confidently say that doing a placement was one of the best decisions I have ever made! So why do a placement? The opportunities to develop your skills (soft or technical) are numerous. Its finally a chance for you to experience how the industry actually works and to apply some of that knowledge gained at university to real-life situations at the work-place. The networking opportunities are also invaluable. Making the right contacts will prove fruitful when searching for jobs after you graduate. Lastly, taking on actual responsibility that affects the performance of the business is just the preparation you need to start your career. What is my role at IBM? I am an IT placement student on the Leading to Africa (L2A) scheme at IBM currently based at South Bank, London. My daily role is as a health check analyst supporting different accounts in the Global Technology Services (GTS) business unit. Being on the L2A scheme allows one to take part in events, virtual conferences, webinars and basically activities aimed at increasing your knowledge of IBMs strategy in Africa and different projects taking place in Africa. The scheme is for students who are interested in working in Africa after they graduate. For more information about the program, checkout the QA blog. My experience at IBM: My time at IBM has been invaluable. I have been able to represent the company at conferences where a head of state, ministers and other delegates were in attendance, collaborate with other employees on different projects, take on extra responsibilities and even take up different modules to develop my skills. All these in a span of only five months! I definitely look forward to the rest of my placement! Tips when applying for a placement: Complete the application as early as possible This gives you a higher chance of getting the role that you want before they fill up. -Give evidence to support your skills mentioned in the application form e.g. projects, positions of responsibility in societies -Show your passion for the company and role during interviews and assessment centres -Lastly, prepare well. This applies to all levels of the application process. All International Internships Student blogs graduate placement work experience

Countdown till Personal Branding Magazine issue 2 tomorrow [sneak preview] - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Countdown till Personal Branding Magazine issue 2 tomorrow [sneak preview] - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career In light of the 2nd issue of Personal Branding Magazine, which debuts tomorrow, I have included part of my interview with Philip Rosedale, founder of Second Life. The interview got A LOT more interesting than what you see below. I truly appreciate Philips enthusiasm with personal branding and how Second Life has given the world a chance to experience personal branding from an interactive perspective. If you havent already subscribed, make sure you do, so that you can receive your copy tomorrow. This issue has been named the bible of personal branding. Me: Philip, how did you come up with the idea for Second Life? Do you actually have your own avatar in Second Life? Philip Rosedale: As a kid I was always modifying the world around me, like growing up I did electronics from like the fourth grade, and I was pretty comfortable with power tools and making things and I studied physics, ultimately in college (at the University of California, San Diego). I always felt that using computers to digitally simulate a world, to simulate the physics of reality was the ultimate thing you wanted to use computers for. And if you could use networking obviously one computer couldnt do that well, but a lot of computers could. I left RealNetworks (in 1999) and started working on it at the very moment I thought it was possible. Yes I have my own avatar, and I regularly go into Second Life to interact and hold “town hall” meetings and office hours with residents. Want more? Subscribe to Personal Branding Magazine to receive issue 2 tomorrow! Tagged: Todd Defren, Darren Rowse, Chris Brogan, Jeremiah Owyang, John Moore, Brian Solis, Steve Rubel

Book review Inside Apple by Adam Lashinsky - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Book review Inside Apple by Adam Lashinsky - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog I just finished reading Inside Apple by Adam Lashinsky and I was struck by two observations: 1: Apple gets a lot of things exactly right and some other things exactly wrong. Ie- the design-driven development, the commitment to making great products and the pride their employees can take in contributing to that are all fantastic. On the other hand, Apples culture of fear, paranoia and mistrust really comes through in the book. Check out this article about Apples secret police. I think Apple could be even more successful (hard as that is to imagine) without the paranoia and bad behavior shown in the book. However, I think some people will conclude that Apple are assholes and Apple is successful. Being an asshole makes you successful. 2: The Apple culture is completely at odds with the Apple brand. The Apple brand is about individuality and freedom of expression. The Apple culture is about secrecy, uniformity and doing what youre told. Is that duality sustainable in the long rung? I dont think so. Finally, I simply cant figure out from the book if Apple is a happy or unhappy workplace. Its clear that employee happiness was certainly never a top priority for Steve Jobs and other top execs. On the other hand, their pride in their products and in working for Jobss vision makes them happy. In any case, read the book it rocks. Thanks for visiting my blog. Im an Honest Scrap!

Im an Honest Scrap! Yay hooray another award! Its my second, and boy is it an awesome one. Kristin from Discover: Interior Design nominated me as an Honest Scrap! The award isnt defined, per se, but it makes me think Im like Christian Bale in Newsies, earning an honest nickel and singing along the way. Thanks so much, Kristen! Ill look for my newsboy cap in the mail ?? In order to accept my award, I have to share 10 honest things about myself. Are we scared yet? 1 2. Both of my pinkies are bent. I was born that way, with my pinkies touching my palms, but I had surgery when I was in first grade to correct it. The cast went all the way around my hand, because of that, I never learned how to hold a pen correctly. So, I have bent pinkies (which never got all-the-way straight, but are only noticed by dance/yoga teachers) hold my pen/pencil weird. This totally counts as two things. 3. Along the lines of weird things I do, I learned how to whistle by blowing in. Now that Im trying to be a better/louder whistler, Im working on blowing out. Insert your own Thats what she said joke here. 4. Oh, and along the lines of more weird things I do, I snap by taking my thumb and essentially putting it behind my knuckle of my second finger. I know you dont understand. Im the only one who does it. But man, does it work! 5. The first concert I ever went to was Debbie Gibson at Radio City Music Hall in June 1988. I sat in the 4th row with my Mom ( my Debbie Gibson hat) got to touch her hand. I still have the T shirt from the concert, its one of my most treasured possessions. So soft! What 10 year old girl from Long Island wouldnt   want to be her? Photo via Ape Culture 6. My mother I have an ongoing argument as to who asked who if I wanted a perm. I have a distinct memory of being in middle school and her saying, Do you want to get a perm? while she swears that I asked her for it. Well, someones gotta take the blame! No wonder I didnt have a date to the 8th grade dance. And no, you can not, will not, wont not ever see a photo. 7. I have a terrible sense of direction. So terrible, in fact, that I joke that North is always when I go straight ahead, West is when I make a left turn (but when I straighten out Im going North again), East is when I make a right turn (but when I straighten out Im going North again), South is when I go in reverse. This might be a big reason why I rarely drive. 8. Luke I have a Nerd Corner in our apartment. On one wall is a framed Star Wars poster, cattycorner to it is a bunch of signed, framed Playbills. Im not sure if this set-up will move with us to our new home, but it represents us to a T. 9. I took piano lessons for about 6 years, but can not sit down a play a single thing. I never got that whole memorizing music thing. 10. I called the bridesmaids at my wedding bridesbabes, because they were not my maids! And they were totally babes. See? Stunningly amazing photo by Kate Leigh. I now hereby nominate the following blogs as Honest Scraps: Nicole J Butler Warrior Girl, Youre a Warrior Mama Now Coach Cassandra Rae Hit Runners OwningPink More in You CreateGirl As nominees, you must now: Say thanks and give a link to the presenter of the award. (Thats me!) Share “10 Honest Things” about yourself. Present this award to 7 others whose blogs you find brilliant in content and/or design, or those who have encouraged you. Tell those 7 people they’ve been awarded HONEST SCRAP and inform them of these guidelines in receiving. Thanks again to Kristin for making me an Newsie Honest Scrap!
