While it may not be the ultimate deciding factor in choosing a job, it would be naive to deny the role it plays. First, you need to examine your current financial situation. Ask yourself these questions: Are you single or do you have a family? Do you have a mortgage? What financial responsibilities do you have? What are your financial goals? All of these are going to play a major role in the kind of money you are looking for. Second, you need to realize that financials donât just refer to your gross salary. Itâs also important to look at the benefits. For example, the salary may not be great, but perhaps they have a killer health insurance plan that help cover you and the members of your family. It is extremely unlikely that any one company will have the perfect salary with the perfect benefits package. Thatâs why itâs important to get clear on what matters most to you and make your decision from there. Do the companys values align with your own? Lets be frank, it sucks to go to a job you hate every day. One way to avoid this is to evaluate the companyâs values and see if theyre aligned with your own. One common valueespecially among millennialsis flexibility. If this is really important to you then youâre going to want to make sure your job allows for it. For instance, maybe they allow telecommuting. Or, as is the case with one of my coaching clients, maybe the company values work-life balance and considers 35 hours/week to be full time. If you donât evaluate your values and choose a job that is close to them, then youâre going to be looking for a new job sooner than you anticipated. Once again, itâs important to note that no company is perfect. Maybe they align with your values, but your financial situation requires you to take the job with the better benefits package. Thatâs okay because clearly you place a high value on security and are acting accordingly. The issue arises when people make decisions that go against what they find to be important in life.
