7 ways thinking like a detective will make you smarter
7 ways thinking like a detective will make you smarter7 ways thinking like a detective will make you smarterHow good are you at connecting thedots?Detectives are often portrayed as brilliant, talented minds. They possess the rare gift to see what ordinary people cant. However, theres a method to that superpower. The word detective means uncovering the truth its about detecting both whats possible and improbable. To better observe how people act and why. And, finally, eliminate the impossible.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraSearching for relationships between facts is a habit. Its essential to produce new ideas, as James Webb Young explains in his famous5-step techniquefor creative problem-solving.You dont need to be a bright detective to think like one exercise your ability to find the relationship between facts.1. Deduction and Mindfulness GoTogetherWhen we think of mindful peop le, Sherlock Holmes is not a top-of-mind example. However, thats the secret behind the most famous detective ever. Mindfulness allowed him to return his wandering attention to focus on whatever matters to him.As Maria Konnikova explains inMastermind How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes, the English detective was always observing, rather than merely seeing. Being present and focused allowed him to look for clues that will guide him to the real solution.I consider that a mans brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as youchoose.- SherlockHolmesHolmes observed facts without being judgmental. The detective focused on finding the connections and making sense out of everything he saw. He applied the principles ofDeductive Reasoning.Sherlock would write down some hypothesis about what he believed happened. He would then search for more evidence to logically validate his initial statements. The detective deconstructed what happened piece by piece. It seems counterintuitive to walk away from a problem you want to solve. Forcing your mind to take a step back is not easy. Dr. Watson couldnt detach from the issue at hand. He couldnt tolerate when Holmes became distracted by lighter things. However, deduction requires taking distance. We let the answer find us not the other way around.Sherlock Holmes spent his life in mindful interaction with the world around him. Your beliefs or blind spots can sometimes tint your intuition.Practicing mindfulnessopens your mind instead of judging facts, you observe them.2. All Stories Are Possible Until They AreNotWhen Agatha Christie penned Hercule Poirot, she had no idea she would write books featuring him for decades to come.Unlike Sherlock, the Belgian detective is both left-brained and right-brained. Morality also plays a significant role in how he uncovers the truth. Poirot is more than a detective he is a storyteller.Poirot encourages everybody to tell their story. Most are full of co ntradiction most are fantasies. The detective is patient he listens to multiple accounts of what happened and why. He allows everyone to share their own point of view.Christie populated her books with multiple suspects who seemed equally insincere until the real killer was finally revealed. Stories help Poirot comprehend what kind of person the victim was. And to uncover the murderer motive.Take nothing for granted. The Belgian detective doesnt use mental shortcuts. He doesnt accept the verdict of others, nor does he jump into quick conclusions either. Every single piece has to fall into its proper place.Poirots morality is not conflict-free. In Murder in the Orient Express, all the suspects end being guilty. Yet, he lets them get away with it. Though this seems like a significant betrayal to his own doctrine, its actually an evolution of the detectives character. At the end of the story, Poirot realizes that life is full of moral gray areas. The group had killed a man. But, the vict im has left everyone emotionally scarred and damaged.Storytelling is powerful to uncover insights, not just the truth.plan Thinking a process for creative problem solving leverages the power of stories to detect human desires and needs. Just like Poirot you must be patient and listen to many, diverse stories the truth lies within richness.3. Be RelentlessSarah Linden is the least self-aware television detective she is genuine and flawed. Sarah is clueless about herself, her relationships and being a mother.Linden is a runner both metaphorically and literally. She now jogs to clear her mind. She escaped from a foster home. Sarah has spent her whole life running away from childhood wounds. Her worst qualities are also her best she pushes it further than no one else. When others go to rest, Sarah keeps digging for the truth.Lindens stoic and quiet character define this driven detective. She takes it all in. When surveying crime scenes, she absorbs every detail. Her mind doesnt ever stop . She is always coming up with new hypotheses Sarah questions suspects over and over.Assumptions are our enemies. Sarah continually warns his partner about jumping too quick into conclusions. Stephen Holder tends to be more impulsive, while she remains cool and clear-headed.Youre here. Thats what matters. Thats kind of the only thing that matters. That you show up. Youll be alright. SarahLindenHer dedication to her work and stubbornness are unbeatable. She never gives up. Even though she fails in many aspects of her life like being a mother. But, she keeps showing up and trying to do better. She tries again, fails again, and fails better.4. Seek for the AhaMomentLife in paradise seems straightforward but death is not. Thats what Detective Humphrey Goodman learned when he moved from London to the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie.Humphry is very clumsy. He often forgets things and usually finds himself with nothing to take notes on. However, this doesnt stop him from being a brilliant detective.Mess and I are very old friends.?Humphrey GoodmanHumphrey has a knack at being able to solve murders by making sense out of small details.Goodman knows how to connect the dots. Thinking outside of the box is second nature for him. Behind his unconventional approach, theres an ingenious method. He always finds a unique and surprising angle to uncover the truth. In his aim to answer the questions of who, how, and why? Humphrey usually gets stuck. He works on puzzles until he comes up with a riddle related to the case in question.Often toward the end, the detective has a moment of realization. An ordinary element or event triggers an Aha moment and helps him solve the crime. It could be an empty bottle of ketchup, ants on a window, or something a suspect said.Everyone is guilty until proven innocent. Goodman likes to assemble all suspects to reveal who the killer is. He first explains why each of them might be the murderer. Then, one by one, he eliminates all possibi lities. In the end, theres one suspect left no matter how improbable, the real killer is uncovered. An obsession with small details helps trigger an Aha moment. Connecting what seems unrelated feels crazy at first. But, when all the pieces fall into place, the solution ends makes sense.5. Being Vulnerable Is BeingSmartNo training on earth can prepare us to deal with someone like Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Thats what Clarice Ann Starling discovered when she first visited the violent psychopath. The rookie FBI werber felt exposed by the killer and brilliant psychiatrist played by Anthony Hopkins.Clarice didnt try to hide her inexperience though. She doesnt pretend to be something shes not.Im still in training at the Academy. ClariceJack Crawford sent a trainee to me? LecterWere talking about psychology, Doctor, not the Bureau. Can you decide for yourself whether or not Im qualified? ClariceThe heroic FBI trainee is direct, honest, and determined. Clarice isnt quite sure of herself at first bu t knows how to manage her insecurities. Underneath Starlings many vulnerabilities lies her substantial strength.Clarice wants to succeed against all the odds. Shes a smart and brave agent, but still a trainee. Shes also a woman in a male-driven world. Clarice experiences fear but dont let that feeling stop her.As she continues to open up with Lecter, the doctor obsessively wants to understand Clarices emotions. Scared at first, then exhilarated, she shares her emotional journey. The young FBI agent likes her job even getting used to deal with finding body parts in jars.By being authentic, Clarice disarmed Dr. Lecters intellectual superiority. Instead of trying to compete with him, her vulnerability made Hannibal more cooperative.Being vulnerable reflects the best on you and others. You dont need to outsmart others to find a great solution. Vulnerability is not a weakness, but a superpower what we reflect comes back to us.6. Follow Your IntuitionUnlike Sherlock, Father Browns methods tend to be more intuitive rather than deductive. The Catholic priest is a detective in disguise.G.K. Chestertons fictional character was based on a real priest one with a deep understanding of human evil. Father Brown doesnt look like the smartest guy in the room. He overplays appearing clumsy, and naive. His appearance provides freedom to reisepass inadvertently. It disguises his bright mind, penetrating insight, and a gift for observation. While the police use more straightforward methods, the priest relies on thepower of empathy.Father Brown is a kind man who feels sympathy for every suspect. By identifying with them, he can feel and think like a criminal. His experience as a confessor shapes his detective abilities. As a priest, he understands the nature of evil. Brown uses empathy to get inside the criminal mind. He can see what others cant thats how we solve crimes. As Brown explains, You see, I had murdered them all myself. I had planned out each of the crimes very carefully. I had thought out exactly how a thing like that could be done, and in what style or state of mind a man could really do it. And when I was quite sure that I felt exactly like the murderer myself, of course I knew who he was.Father Brown solves his crimes through a strict reasoning process more. Hes more concerned with spiritual and philosophic truths than with scientific details. Hes an almost equal counterbalance with Holmes.Sherlock finds the criminal by starting from the outside. He relies on science, experimental methods, and induction. Father Brown, on the other hand, uses refined psychological experiences learned from confession. He relies on empathy, intuition, and introspection. The Italian Marxist theoristAntonio Gramscibelieves the nature of each detective is based on their religious view Protestant and Catholic respectively.Brown reminds us that you dont need aformal titleor expertise to be good at solving problems. He is not an actual detective but is as competent as one. His life as a priest turned him into an intuitive human behavior expert he reads between the lines of life and death.7. Find YourSidekickBroadchurchis a dark and emotional series. No surprise then that the main character embodies them perfectly. Alec Hardy just like detective Linden carries a heavy backpack.Unresolved issues and mistakes haunt detective Hardy. His family situation is a mess. He took the blame for a previous failing case when evidence was stolen from his wifes car.Sanbrook doesnt make vulnerable. It makes me the best man for the job. AlecHardyHardy is secretive, aloof, and determined. He is suffering from a heart condition but doesnt tell anyone not even his partner. Alec always keeps his guard up. He hides his feelings behind a veil of sarcasm and attitude.Detective Hardy believes everyone in Broadchurch is too emotionally caught up in the investigation. But, he cant solve the murder without Ellie. They both have an up and down partnership.Ellie is compassionate and strong-willed. She was supposed to be promoted to Detective Inspector Hardys role. However, Ellie is caring and devoted to her job. But, shes not afraid to show her emotions.Hardy likes to hold lengthy interrogations. He is a man on a mission. Alec never stops suspects and witnesses have to keep up with his pace.Ellie, on the other hand, invests a lot of her time in building relationships. Shes part of the community. Miller fixes what Hardy breaks.Sherlock had Watson. Linden has Holder. Ellie Miller is Alec Hardy perfect sidekick. She counterbalances his rational and relentless spirit. But, Alec offsets hers too. Especially, after Ellie realizes that his own husband was the murderer.A great die beiden unzertrennlichen is where both parts can complement and balance each other. We all need a partner in crime to help us see what we miss. Our sidekick is an accountability partner it increases our chances of success.Connecting theDotsProblem-solving requires more than one method. Every idea is possible until proven the contrary. Thinking like a detective is being obsessed about solving a problem.Finding the solution is not enough you want to eliminate the problem. As P. D. James said What the detective story is about is not murder but the restoration of order.Solving problems is about embracing different mindsets. Not all detectives think alike. Sherlock uses mindfulness Father Brown intuition. Clarice benefited from embracing vulnerability and Linden from being relentless. No matter the detective style you choose, you cant solve problems alone. Careers in the Sports Industry
Careers in the Sports IndustryCareers in the Sports IndustryMany young athletes- those who play soccer, basketball, football, baseball and other sports- dream of having professional careers someday. However, only a select few will make it to the pros. And out of those who do, those careers are often short-lived due to injuries or other career-ending problems. Does that mean dreaming about a sports-related career is a waste of time? Not at all. If you cant be on the field (or court), how about doing something off of it? There are many careers that utilize athletes knowledge and skills. For example, you might consider becoming a coach. What a great way to put your experience in the game you love to good use Most entry level jobs require experience in the sport you want to coach and an exhaustive knowledge of the game is also necessary. Imagine the influence you can have on young players. If you want to work in a school you may have to get certified. Requirements vary by state. Someone who is interested in a healthcare career might look into becoming an athletic trainer. Workers in this occupation treat athletes injuries. Because they provide emergency treatment, they must attend sporting events. One needs a bachelors degree to become an athletic trainer, but many people who work in this profession have a masters degree. As an athlete, you know how to stay in great shape. Maybe you lift weights or do aerobics. Teach other people what you know by becoming a fitness trainer. You will be able to work with individuals or groups, providing both instruction and motivation. While you dont need a college degree to be afitness trainer, many employers prefer to hire workers who havean associate or bachelors degree in a health or fitness major. Do you like to talk or write about sporting events? How about becoming a sports reporter? You will get to watch sporting events and interview professional athletes and coaches. Then you will report stories either in newspapers or on w ebsites, or during television or radio broadcasts. You will probably need to earn a bachelors degree in journalism or communication. If you enjoy talking about sports, another career to consider is a sports announcer. There are two kinds of sports announcers public address announcers and broadcast announcers. Public address announcers communicate with the attendees at a game, tell them about the starting lineup, announcing players as they enter the field or court and providing the play-by-play during the game. Broadcast sports announcers offer commentary and interview participants and other guests. If you want to become a broadcast sports announcer, you will need to earn a bachelors degree but public address announcers only need a high school diploma.??

What Makes an Elevator Green
What Makes an Elevator Green What Makes an Elevator Green In the beginning there was Archimedes, who in 236 B.C.E. hooked his famous pulleys to the top of a big wooden box and began to pull. Eureka, the elevator was born. Made of locally sourced, sustainably produced materials, his person-powered off-the-grid invention is the distant ancestor of a new crop of eco-friendly elevators now courting the growing green-building market. Some estimates project that buildings consume about 40% of the worlds energy, and elevators account for between 2% and 10% of a buildings energy use. The leading elevator manufacturers are rising up to get those numbers down. What makes an elevator green? Energy consumption is key, but thats just a start. The materials, processes, and technologies that go into the manufacture of an elevator system also count. So too do the choices of interior paints, flooring, control panels, lighting, and HVAC systems. All of these elements can contribute points to a buildings overall score for LEED accreditation by the U.S. Green Building Council. Here is a snapshot of how the major elevator makers are addressing these design elements.Machine-Room-Less TechnologyIntroduced in the mid-1990s, machine-room-less (MRL) technology was one of the biggest advances in elevator design since they went electric a century before. Miniaturization has made it feasible to house the MRL machinery right in the elevator shaft rather than in a costly rooftop machine room. Incorporating a gearless traction design, MRL elevators in some cases can use up to 80% less energy than hydraulic lifts, without the expense and environmental headaches of oil-filled underground hydraulic cylinders.Machine-roomless elevators are compact, lightweight, gearless machines with greater energy efficiency. Image source EnergyDesignResources.comKONE, Inc. (Moline, IL) introduced the first MRL elevator and places so much stock in the technology that the company discontinued manufacturing hydrauli c elevators altogether. Its EcoSpace MRL elevator design incorporates a low-friction, gearless hoisting apparatus that prevents wear and reduces energy consumption by half compared to a geared system.A machine-room-less elevator system by Otis (Farmington, CT), the Gen2 system, is scalable to save energy in a range of building heights. It too aspires to 50% energy reduction over earlier systems, with the added green bonus of lubrication-free operation thanks to polyurethane coated-steel belts, gearless machine, and roller guides.Regenerative DrivesGreen elevators dont just stop with reducing energy consumption some of them give back much of what they take. Regenerative drive systems recover energy that would normally be dissipated as heat and put it back into the buildings electrical system. Not only does the technology produce power for lighting and air conditioning, it also saves money by reducing the need for machine-room cooling. Regenerative drives reduce power consumption dur ing peak periods, contributing to a buildings overall operational bottom line. fruchtwein of the major players offer this technology.Control FeaturesIts a matter of physics elevators without very many passengers aboard require more energy due to the weight differential between the elevator and its counterweight. A major goal of green elevator technology is to cut down on these light loads through precision traffic control, management of interior lighting and other energy-burning factors.Conventional elevator (left) and elevator with destination control (right). With a destination control system, floor calls are grouped. Image source SchindlerNovel computerized systems help reduce the number of light-load trips while ensuring that there are enough elevators in operation to provide fast service. Schindlers (Morristown, NJ) systems offer an Energy Control Option (ECO) mode that switches unused elevators into standby. If waiting times become too long, the system will activate additional cabs to meet the need. ThyssenKrupp (Memphis, TN) says its Destination Dispatch system improves handling capacity by 15-30%. The system monitors and controls the amount of current delivered to the motor, ensuring the correct level to provide to keep the motor running at full speed. As a result, the motor is protected from peak over-currents, potenzial overload and sudden power surges.Outside the boxGreen elevator technology isnt limited to whats in the shaft. Companies include external factors in their sustainability bona fides that contribute to a lower overall carbon footprint across the elevators life cycle while reflecting their green corporate values. Customers considering an elevator vendor can evaluate the energy-efficiency of its manufacturing facilities, service fleet management practices, remote monitoring technologies for early diagnosis of mechanical problems, and other support systems.Elevators will never again be as eco-neutral as it was back in Archimedes day, but it s clear that green elevator technology is on the way up.Michael MacRae is an independent writer.Green elevators dont just stop with reducing energy consumption some of them give back much of what they take.

How to Find Local Job Listings
How to Find Local Job ListingsHow to Find Local Job ListingsAre you looking for a job and not having much luck finding local job listings? There are variety of ways to narrow down your local job search to focus on jobs near you or in the locations where you are interested in working. Use Local Job Search Resources First, use local search resources. Sounds simple, doesnt it? But, many job seekers get so focused on 21st century job-search methods that they forget the old-fashioned ones. Start close to home, and look for resources in your city or town. Our local Chamber of Commerce website, for example, has been an excellent resource for job seekers in my town. Employers that are members of the Chamber of Commerce can post job opportunities for free and those local job listings are often posted on the website before they are advertised elsewhere. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has a directory you can use to find your local Chamber. Craigslist is another excellent source for finding l ocal job listings. Use the Job Search Engines Using a job search engine is a great way to find local job listings. Use the type of job you are interested in as a keyword, then enter your city, state, and ZIP code to find local jobs. Advanced search options will enable you to refine your local job search even further, and search by company, words in the job title, and the radius from a city or ZIP code. Check the Classifieds The next step in conducting a local job search is to check your local newspaper classified ads on a daily basis. Many newspapers are affiliated with CareerBuilder but not all of them. Some small to mid-sized employers only advertise locally. Most local newspapers are available online. Google the name of your local paper, and youll find its online presence pretty quickly. From there, itll be simple to find job listings, usually in their own separate section of the site. Check Local Job Listings The big job search sites let you look for work in any par t of the country (and often the world), but they also let you look locally, as well. Monster and the other job banks contain local job listings and users can search by ZIP code or city/region. Also check your local Nextdoor.com site, you may find job opportunities right in your own neighborhood. Read the News Be aware of the latest business news in the community youre interested in. American City Business Journals contains information on business in a variety of cities. Each journal is updated weekly and should be required reading for anyone interested in the pulse of the local business community including new businesses, expansions, and cut-backs. This will help you know which employers to target in your search. You dont want to apply for a job at an organization thats going to have layoffs in six months. Find Companies Use the Verizon Yellow Pages to search for local companies by keyword and/or location. You may find potential employers that you didnt know about. Then visi t the companys website to review job openings and career information. Follow Employers on Social Media When we talk about social media in the context of job searching, its usually to discuss the things you shouldnt do, if you want to get hired. But, social media isnt just a negative factor in your job search with a little careful curation, you can use it to help you get the attention of a hiring manager at your favorite local company. Start by following your local employers on the social networks you already use, like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Look for job postings, but dont stop there cultivate a connection with the company by participating in conversations with them, using the appropriate hashtags. Network, Network, Network Finally, dont forget to network. It really does work Up to 80 percent of all jobs are found by networking. Some of the best job opportunities never make it to job boards or corporate sites. To get to these secret listings, you need a f riend on the inside. Fortunately, its easier than ever to cultivate those relationships, thanks to those aforementioned social networks. LinkedIn, in particular, can be a great way to forge connections to local jobs. But, dont overlook your real-life connections, either your former colleague, boss, roommate, etc., might know about a job opportunity at their company that would be perfect for you. Keep in touch online, plan regular coffee dates to renew the relationship, and be on the lookout for opportunities to help them, as well. That way, theyll think of you first when jobs open up.

More On the Video Interviewing and Discrimination Discussion - Spark Hire
More On the Video Interviewing and Discrimination Discussion - Spark HireSpark Hire CEO Josh Tolan recently had a guest post featured on TheStreet.com, 4 Reasons Video Job Interviews Are Here to Stay. Several readers commented and contributed to the discussion regarding discrimination and video bewerbungsinterviews, which served as the inspiration for this blog post. Understandably, this is a topic that continues to surface as the technology grows in popularity so we would like to take this opportunity to touch on this topic further for our readers.First, it should be recognized that video interviews and discrimination do not go hand-in-hand. Only people have the capability to discriminate technology and video interviews do not. The sad reality is that a job candidate faces an equal chance of being discriminated against in a video interview as they would for an in-person interview. Some might believe that using video interviews will make the focus less about a candidates job qualifica tions and skills and more about how comfortable he or she is in front of a camera. Additionally, some may argue that video interviews encourage employers to only hire candidates based on their looks. If these are the results of a video interview, that is not the fault of the technology, but of the people involved with hiring. Video interviewing gives all candidates the same chance at being hired for a job. Specifically, in our One-Way interview each question is presented the same way and in the same bestellung to every candidate therefore, one candidate does not have an advantage over another candidate in any way.The purpose of video interviews is to increase the efficiency of a companys hiring process and that will be achieved if video interviews are used properly. Video interviews are convenient for both employers and job seekers because it eliminates the stress of scheduling. Job seekers arent required to do any traveling for video interviews so companies save money from not havi ng to spend on travel and lodging accommodations. In 2004 and 2010, the EEOC wrote opinion letters on video interviewing stating that there is nothing illegal about it. The EEOC particularly had this to say on the subject Employers and recruiters should continue to structure their recruitment and selection processes to be nondiscriminatory and to consistently focus on the job qualifications of all job seekers, regardless of technology or of the information available by virtue of that technology. To reiterate an earlier point of this post, technology does not and cannot discriminate, people do. An online video interviewing platform cannot make an employers final hiring decision. If the hiring practice at a company involves discriminating, stereotyping, and basing decisions on the physical appearance of a person, that is a flaw of the individuals involved and not the usage of video interviewing itself. The question a job candidate must then ask him or herself is if they want to work at a company that employs people that behave this way. If not, they can move on in their job hunt to bigger and, most likely, better opportunities.
