7 ways thinking like a detective will make you smarter

7 ways thinking like a detective will make you smarter7 ways thinking like a detective will make you smarterHow good are you at connecting thedots?Detectives are often portrayed as brilliant, talented minds. They possess the rare gift to see what ordinary people cant. However, theres a method to that superpower. The word detective means uncovering the truth its about detecting both whats possible and improbable. To better observe how people act and why. And, finally, eliminate the impossible.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraSearching for relationships between facts is a habit. Its essential to produce new ideas, as James Webb Young explains in his famous5-step techniquefor creative problem-solving.You dont need to be a bright detective to think like one exercise your ability to find the relationship between facts.1. Deduction and Mindfulness GoTogetherWhen we think of mindful peop le, Sherlock Holmes is not a top-of-mind example. However, thats the secret behind the most famous detective ever. Mindfulness allowed him to return his wandering attention to focus on whatever matters to him.As Maria Konnikova explains inMastermind How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes, the English detective was always observing, rather than merely seeing. Being present and focused allowed him to look for clues that will guide him to the real solution.I consider that a mans brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as youchoose.- SherlockHolmesHolmes observed facts without being judgmental. The detective focused on finding the connections and making sense out of everything he saw. He applied the principles ofDeductive Reasoning.Sherlock would write down some hypothesis about what he believed happened. He would then search for more evidence to logically validate his initial statements. The detective deconstructed what happened piece by piece. It seems counterintuitive to walk away from a problem you want to solve. Forcing your mind to take a step back is not easy. Dr. Watson couldnt detach from the issue at hand. He couldnt tolerate when Holmes became distracted by lighter things. However, deduction requires taking distance. We let the answer find us not the other way around.Sherlock Holmes spent his life in mindful interaction with the world around him. Your beliefs or blind spots can sometimes tint your intuition.Practicing mindfulnessopens your mind instead of judging facts, you observe them.2. All Stories Are Possible Until They AreNotWhen Agatha Christie penned Hercule Poirot, she had no idea she would write books featuring him for decades to come.Unlike Sherlock, the Belgian detective is both left-brained and right-brained. Morality also plays a significant role in how he uncovers the truth. Poirot is more than a detective he is a storyteller.Poirot encourages everybody to tell their story. Most are full of co ntradiction most are fantasies. The detective is patient he listens to multiple accounts of what happened and why. He allows everyone to share their own point of view.Christie populated her books with multiple suspects who seemed equally insincere until the real killer was finally revealed. Stories help Poirot comprehend what kind of person the victim was. And to uncover the murderer motive.Take nothing for granted. The Belgian detective doesnt use mental shortcuts. He doesnt accept the verdict of others, nor does he jump into quick conclusions either. Every single piece has to fall into its proper place.Poirots morality is not conflict-free. In Murder in the Orient Express, all the suspects end being guilty. Yet, he lets them get away with it. Though this seems like a significant betrayal to his own doctrine, its actually an evolution of the detectives character. At the end of the story, Poirot realizes that life is full of moral gray areas. The group had killed a man. But, the vict im has left everyone emotionally scarred and damaged.Storytelling is powerful to uncover insights, not just the truth.plan Thinking a process for creative problem solving leverages the power of stories to detect human desires and needs. Just like Poirot you must be patient and listen to many, diverse stories the truth lies within richness.3. Be RelentlessSarah Linden is the least self-aware television detective she is genuine and flawed. Sarah is clueless about herself, her relationships and being a mother.Linden is a runner both metaphorically and literally. She now jogs to clear her mind. She escaped from a foster home. Sarah has spent her whole life running away from childhood wounds. Her worst qualities are also her best she pushes it further than no one else. When others go to rest, Sarah keeps digging for the truth.Lindens stoic and quiet character define this driven detective. She takes it all in. When surveying crime scenes, she absorbs every detail. Her mind doesnt ever stop . She is always coming up with new hypotheses Sarah questions suspects over and over.Assumptions are our enemies. Sarah continually warns his partner about jumping too quick into conclusions. Stephen Holder tends to be more impulsive, while she remains cool and clear-headed.Youre here. Thats what matters. Thats kind of the only thing that matters. That you show up. Youll be alright. SarahLindenHer dedication to her work and stubbornness are unbeatable. She never gives up. Even though she fails in many aspects of her life like being a mother. But, she keeps showing up and trying to do better. She tries again, fails again, and fails better.4. Seek for the AhaMomentLife in paradise seems straightforward but death is not. Thats what Detective Humphrey Goodman learned when he moved from London to the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie.Humphry is very clumsy. He often forgets things and usually finds himself with nothing to take notes on. However, this doesnt stop him from being a brilliant detective.Mess and I are very old friends.?Humphrey GoodmanHumphrey has a knack at being able to solve murders by making sense out of small details.Goodman knows how to connect the dots. Thinking outside of the box is second nature for him. Behind his unconventional approach, theres an ingenious method. He always finds a unique and surprising angle to uncover the truth. In his aim to answer the questions of who, how, and why? Humphrey usually gets stuck. He works on puzzles until he comes up with a riddle related to the case in question.Often toward the end, the detective has a moment of realization. An ordinary element or event triggers an Aha moment and helps him solve the crime. It could be an empty bottle of ketchup, ants on a window, or something a suspect said.Everyone is guilty until proven innocent. Goodman likes to assemble all suspects to reveal who the killer is. He first explains why each of them might be the murderer. Then, one by one, he eliminates all possibi lities. In the end, theres one suspect left no matter how improbable, the real killer is uncovered. An obsession with small details helps trigger an Aha moment. Connecting what seems unrelated feels crazy at first. But, when all the pieces fall into place, the solution ends makes sense.5. Being Vulnerable Is BeingSmartNo training on earth can prepare us to deal with someone like Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Thats what Clarice Ann Starling discovered when she first visited the violent psychopath. The rookie FBI werber felt exposed by the killer and brilliant psychiatrist played by Anthony Hopkins.Clarice didnt try to hide her inexperience though. She doesnt pretend to be something shes not.Im still in training at the Academy. ClariceJack Crawford sent a trainee to me? LecterWere talking about psychology, Doctor, not the Bureau. Can you decide for yourself whether or not Im qualified? ClariceThe heroic FBI trainee is direct, honest, and determined. Clarice isnt quite sure of herself at first bu t knows how to manage her insecurities. Underneath Starlings many vulnerabilities lies her substantial strength.Clarice wants to succeed against all the odds. Shes a smart and brave agent, but still a trainee. Shes also a woman in a male-driven world. Clarice experiences fear but dont let that feeling stop her.As she continues to open up with Lecter, the doctor obsessively wants to understand Clarices emotions. Scared at first, then exhilarated, she shares her emotional journey. The young FBI agent likes her job even getting used to deal with finding body parts in jars.By being authentic, Clarice disarmed Dr. Lecters intellectual superiority. Instead of trying to compete with him, her vulnerability made Hannibal more cooperative.Being vulnerable reflects the best on you and others. You dont need to outsmart others to find a great solution. Vulnerability is not a weakness, but a superpower what we reflect comes back to us.6. Follow Your IntuitionUnlike Sherlock, Father Browns methods tend to be more intuitive rather than deductive. The Catholic priest is a detective in disguise.G.K. Chestertons fictional character was based on a real priest one with a deep understanding of human evil. Father Brown doesnt look like the smartest guy in the room. He overplays appearing clumsy, and naive. His appearance provides freedom to reisepass inadvertently. It disguises his bright mind, penetrating insight, and a gift for observation. While the police use more straightforward methods, the priest relies on thepower of empathy.Father Brown is a kind man who feels sympathy for every suspect. By identifying with them, he can feel and think like a criminal. His experience as a confessor shapes his detective abilities. As a priest, he understands the nature of evil. Brown uses empathy to get inside the criminal mind. He can see what others cant thats how we solve crimes. As Brown explains, You see, I had murdered them all myself. I had planned out each of the crimes very carefully. I had thought out exactly how a thing like that could be done, and in what style or state of mind a man could really do it. And when I was quite sure that I felt exactly like the murderer myself, of course I knew who he was.Father Brown solves his crimes through a strict reasoning process more. Hes more concerned with spiritual and philosophic truths than with scientific details. Hes an almost equal counterbalance with Holmes.Sherlock finds the criminal by starting from the outside. He relies on science, experimental methods, and induction. Father Brown, on the other hand, uses refined psychological experiences learned from confession. He relies on empathy, intuition, and introspection. The Italian Marxist theoristAntonio Gramscibelieves the nature of each detective is based on their religious view Protestant and Catholic respectively.Brown reminds us that you dont need aformal titleor expertise to be good at solving problems. He is not an actual detective but is as competent as one. His life as a priest turned him into an intuitive human behavior expert he reads between the lines of life and death.7. Find YourSidekickBroadchurchis a dark and emotional series. No surprise then that the main character embodies them perfectly. Alec Hardy just like detective Linden carries a heavy backpack.Unresolved issues and mistakes haunt detective Hardy. His family situation is a mess. He took the blame for a previous failing case when evidence was stolen from his wifes car.Sanbrook doesnt make vulnerable. It makes me the best man for the job. AlecHardyHardy is secretive, aloof, and determined. He is suffering from a heart condition but doesnt tell anyone not even his partner. Alec always keeps his guard up. He hides his feelings behind a veil of sarcasm and attitude.Detective Hardy believes everyone in Broadchurch is too emotionally caught up in the investigation. But, he cant solve the murder without Ellie. They both have an up and down partnership.Ellie is compassionate and strong-willed. She was supposed to be promoted to Detective Inspector Hardys role. However, Ellie is caring and devoted to her job. But, shes not afraid to show her emotions.Hardy likes to hold lengthy interrogations. He is a man on a mission. Alec never stops suspects and witnesses have to keep up with his pace.Ellie, on the other hand, invests a lot of her time in building relationships. Shes part of the community. Miller fixes what Hardy breaks.Sherlock had Watson. Linden has Holder. Ellie Miller is Alec Hardy perfect sidekick. She counterbalances his rational and relentless spirit. But, Alec offsets hers too. Especially, after Ellie realizes that his own husband was the murderer.A great die beiden unzertrennlichen is where both parts can complement and balance each other. We all need a partner in crime to help us see what we miss. Our sidekick is an accountability partner it increases our chances of success.Connecting theDotsProblem-solving requires more than one method. Every idea is possible until proven the contrary. Thinking like a detective is being obsessed about solving a problem.Finding the solution is not enough you want to eliminate the problem. As P. D. James said What the detective story is about is not murder but the restoration of order.Solving problems is about embracing different mindsets. Not all detectives think alike. Sherlock uses mindfulness Father Brown intuition. Clarice benefited from embracing vulnerability and Linden from being relentless. No matter the detective style you choose, you cant solve problems alone. Careers in the Sports Industry

Careers in the Sports IndustryCareers in the Sports IndustryMany young athletes- those who play soccer, basketball, football, baseball and other sports- dream of having professional careers someday. However, only a select few will make it to the pros. And out of those who do, those careers are often short-lived due to injuries or other career-ending problems. Does that mean dreaming about a sports-related career is a waste of time? Not at all. If you cant be on the field (or court), how about doing something off of it? There are many careers that utilize athletes knowledge and skills. For example, you might consider becoming a coach. What a great way to put your experience in the game you love to good use Most entry level jobs require experience in the sport you want to coach and an exhaustive knowledge of the game is also necessary. Imagine the influence you can have on young players. If you want to work in a school you may have to get certified. Requirements vary by state. Someone who is interested in a healthcare career might look into becoming an athletic trainer. Workers in this occupation treat athletes injuries. Because they provide emergency treatment, they must attend sporting events. One needs a bachelors degree to become an athletic trainer, but many people who work in this profession have a masters degree. As an athlete, you know how to stay in great shape. Maybe you lift weights or do aerobics. Teach other people what you know by becoming a fitness trainer. You will be able to work with individuals or groups, providing both instruction and motivation. While you dont need a college degree to be afitness trainer, many employers prefer to hire workers who havean associate or bachelors degree in a health or fitness major. Do you like to talk or write about sporting events? How about becoming a sports reporter? You will get to watch sporting events and interview professional athletes and coaches. Then you will report stories either in newspapers or on w ebsites, or during television or radio broadcasts. You will probably need to earn a bachelors degree in journalism or communication. If you enjoy talking about sports, another career to consider is a sports announcer. There are two kinds of sports announcers public address announcers and broadcast announcers. Public address announcers communicate with the attendees at a game, tell them about the starting lineup, announcing players as they enter the field or court and providing the play-by-play during the game. Broadcast sports announcers offer commentary and interview participants and other guests. If you want to become a broadcast sports announcer, you will need to earn a bachelors degree but public address announcers only need a high school diploma.??

What Makes an Elevator Green

What Makes an Elevator Green What Makes an Elevator Green In the beginning there was Archimedes, who in 236 B.C.E. hooked his famous pulleys to the top of a big wooden box and began to pull. Eureka, the elevator was born. Made of locally sourced, sustainably produced materials, his person-powered off-the-grid invention is the distant ancestor of a new crop of eco-friendly elevators now courting the growing green-building market. Some estimates project that buildings consume about 40% of the worlds energy, and elevators account for between 2% and 10% of a buildings energy use. The leading elevator manufacturers are rising up to get those numbers down. What makes an elevator green? Energy consumption is key, but thats just a start. The materials, processes, and technologies that go into the manufacture of an elevator system also count. So too do the choices of interior paints, flooring, control panels, lighting, and HVAC systems. All of these elements can contribute points to a buildings overall score for LEED accreditation by the U.S. Green Building Council. Here is a snapshot of how the major elevator makers are addressing these design elements.Machine-Room-Less TechnologyIntroduced in the mid-1990s, machine-room-less (MRL) technology was one of the biggest advances in elevator design since they went electric a century before. Miniaturization has made it feasible to house the MRL machinery right in the elevator shaft rather than in a costly rooftop machine room. Incorporating a gearless traction design, MRL elevators in some cases can use up to 80% less energy than hydraulic lifts, without the expense and environmental headaches of oil-filled underground hydraulic cylinders.Machine-roomless elevators are compact, lightweight, gearless machines with greater energy efficiency. Image source EnergyDesignResources.comKONE, Inc. (Moline, IL) introduced the first MRL elevator and places so much stock in the technology that the company discontinued manufacturing hydrauli c elevators altogether. Its EcoSpace MRL elevator design incorporates a low-friction, gearless hoisting apparatus that prevents wear and reduces energy consumption by half compared to a geared system.A machine-room-less elevator system by Otis (Farmington, CT), the Gen2 system, is scalable to save energy in a range of building heights. It too aspires to 50% energy reduction over earlier systems, with the added green bonus of lubrication-free operation thanks to polyurethane coated-steel belts, gearless machine, and roller guides.Regenerative DrivesGreen elevators dont just stop with reducing energy consumption some of them give back much of what they take. Regenerative drive systems recover energy that would normally be dissipated as heat and put it back into the buildings electrical system. Not only does the technology produce power for lighting and air conditioning, it also saves money by reducing the need for machine-room cooling. Regenerative drives reduce power consumption dur ing peak periods, contributing to a buildings overall operational bottom line. fruchtwein of the major players offer this technology.Control FeaturesIts a matter of physics elevators without very many passengers aboard require more energy due to the weight differential between the elevator and its counterweight. A major goal of green elevator technology is to cut down on these light loads through precision traffic control, management of interior lighting and other energy-burning factors.Conventional elevator (left) and elevator with destination control (right). With a destination control system, floor calls are grouped. Image source SchindlerNovel computerized systems help reduce the number of light-load trips while ensuring that there are enough elevators in operation to provide fast service. Schindlers (Morristown, NJ) systems offer an Energy Control Option (ECO) mode that switches unused elevators into standby. If waiting times become too long, the system will activate additional cabs to meet the need. ThyssenKrupp (Memphis, TN) says its Destination Dispatch system improves handling capacity by 15-30%. The system monitors and controls the amount of current delivered to the motor, ensuring the correct level to provide to keep the motor running at full speed. As a result, the motor is protected from peak over-currents, potenzial overload and sudden power surges.Outside the boxGreen elevator technology isnt limited to whats in the shaft. Companies include external factors in their sustainability bona fides that contribute to a lower overall carbon footprint across the elevators life cycle while reflecting their green corporate values. Customers considering an elevator vendor can evaluate the energy-efficiency of its manufacturing facilities, service fleet management practices, remote monitoring technologies for early diagnosis of mechanical problems, and other support systems.Elevators will never again be as eco-neutral as it was back in Archimedes day, but it s clear that green elevator technology is on the way up.Michael MacRae is an independent writer.Green elevators dont just stop with reducing energy consumption some of them give back much of what they take.

How to Find Local Job Listings

How to Find Local Job ListingsHow to Find Local Job ListingsAre you looking for a job and not having much luck finding local job listings? There are variety of ways to narrow down your local job search to focus on jobs near you or in the locations where you are interested in working. Use Local Job Search Resources First, use local search resources. Sounds simple, doesnt it? But, many job seekers get so focused on 21st century job-search methods that they forget the old-fashioned ones. Start close to home, and look for resources in your city or town. Our local Chamber of Commerce website, for example, has been an excellent resource for job seekers in my town. Employers that are members of the Chamber of Commerce can post job opportunities for free and those local job listings are often posted on the website before they are advertised elsewhere. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has a directory you can use to find your local Chamber. Craigslist is another excellent source for finding l ocal job listings. Use the Job Search Engines Using a job search engine is a great way to find local job listings. Use the type of job you are interested in as a keyword, then enter your city, state, and ZIP code to find local jobs. Advanced search options will enable you to refine your local job search even further, and search by company, words in the job title, and the radius from a city or ZIP code. Check the Classifieds The next step in conducting a local job search is to check your local newspaper classified ads on a daily basis. Many newspapers are affiliated with CareerBuilder but not all of them. Some small to mid-sized employers only advertise locally. Most local newspapers are available online. Google the name of your local paper, and youll find its online presence pretty quickly. From there, itll be simple to find job listings, usually in their own separate section of the site. Check Local Job Listings The big job search sites let you look for work in any par t of the country (and often the world), but they also let you look locally, as well. Monster and the other job banks contain local job listings and users can search by ZIP code or city/region. Also check your local Nextdoor.com site, you may find job opportunities right in your own neighborhood. Read the News Be aware of the latest business news in the community youre interested in. American City Business Journals contains information on business in a variety of cities. Each journal is updated weekly and should be required reading for anyone interested in the pulse of the local business community including new businesses, expansions, and cut-backs. This will help you know which employers to target in your search. You dont want to apply for a job at an organization thats going to have layoffs in six months. Find Companies Use the Verizon Yellow Pages to search for local companies by keyword and/or location. You may find potential employers that you didnt know about. Then visi t the companys website to review job openings and career information. Follow Employers on Social Media When we talk about social media in the context of job searching, its usually to discuss the things you shouldnt do, if you want to get hired. But, social media isnt just a negative factor in your job search with a little careful curation, you can use it to help you get the attention of a hiring manager at your favorite local company. Start by following your local employers on the social networks you already use, like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Look for job postings, but dont stop there cultivate a connection with the company by participating in conversations with them, using the appropriate hashtags. Network, Network, Network Finally, dont forget to network. It really does work Up to 80 percent of all jobs are found by networking. Some of the best job opportunities never make it to job boards or corporate sites. To get to these secret listings, you need a f riend on the inside. Fortunately, its easier than ever to cultivate those relationships, thanks to those aforementioned social networks. LinkedIn, in particular, can be a great way to forge connections to local jobs. But, dont overlook your real-life connections, either your former colleague, boss, roommate, etc., might know about a job opportunity at their company that would be perfect for you. Keep in touch online, plan regular coffee dates to renew the relationship, and be on the lookout for opportunities to help them, as well. That way, theyll think of you first when jobs open up.

More On the Video Interviewing and Discrimination Discussion - Spark Hire

More On the Video Interviewing and Discrimination Discussion - Spark HireSpark Hire CEO Josh Tolan recently had a guest post featured on TheStreet.com, 4 Reasons Video Job Interviews Are Here to Stay. Several readers commented and contributed to the discussion regarding discrimination and video bewerbungsinterviews, which served as the inspiration for this blog post. Understandably, this is a topic that continues to surface as the technology grows in popularity so we would like to take this opportunity to touch on this topic further for our readers.First, it should be recognized that video interviews and discrimination do not go hand-in-hand. Only people have the capability to discriminate technology and video interviews do not. The sad reality is that a job candidate faces an equal chance of being discriminated against in a video interview as they would for an in-person interview. Some might believe that using video interviews will make the focus less about a candidates job qualifica tions and skills and more about how comfortable he or she is in front of a camera. Additionally, some may argue that video interviews encourage employers to only hire candidates based on their looks. If these are the results of a video interview, that is not the fault of the technology, but of the people involved with hiring. Video interviewing gives all candidates the same chance at being hired for a job. Specifically, in our One-Way interview each question is presented the same way and in the same bestellung to every candidate therefore, one candidate does not have an advantage over another candidate in any way.The purpose of video interviews is to increase the efficiency of a companys hiring process and that will be achieved if video interviews are used properly. Video interviews are convenient for both employers and job seekers because it eliminates the stress of scheduling. Job seekers arent required to do any traveling for video interviews so companies save money from not havi ng to spend on travel and lodging accommodations. In 2004 and 2010, the EEOC wrote opinion letters on video interviewing stating that there is nothing illegal about it. The EEOC particularly had this to say on the subject Employers and recruiters should continue to structure their recruitment and selection processes to be nondiscriminatory and to consistently focus on the job qualifications of all job seekers, regardless of technology or of the information available by virtue of that technology. To reiterate an earlier point of this post, technology does not and cannot discriminate, people do. An online video interviewing platform cannot make an employers final hiring decision. If the hiring practice at a company involves discriminating, stereotyping, and basing decisions on the physical appearance of a person, that is a flaw of the individuals involved and not the usage of video interviewing itself. The question a job candidate must then ask him or herself is if they want to work at a company that employs people that behave this way. If not, they can move on in their job hunt to bigger and, most likely, better opportunities.

6 Great Tips to Launch Your Second Career

6 Great Tips to Launch Your Second Career 6 Great Tips to Launch Your Second Career Its not just individual jobs that have come under threat, but entire career paths. We live in an era where entire professions are being supplanted by rapid technological innovationand automation. Not only can we no longer expect a job for life We may not even be able to expect one career for life. Its very likely that fruchtwein us will have second careers, and some of us may even have third or fourth careers. Despite this fact, much of the career advice one finds on the Internet and elsewhere focuses on how tolaunch your first career. In my opinion, its high time we started talking about how professionals can start their second or third careers. Today, then, I offer six tips on that very subject1. Learn From Your First CareerLaunching a second career means more thansimply doing the exact opposite of your current career. You may even like some aspects of your current career, and you dont have to disc ard them entirely.Rather, what you should do is take a look at your current career and identify the things you like and the things you dislike.Make a list of the likes and dislikes, and then seek out a second career thatretains the likes and dispenses with the dislikes.2. Select Your New Career Based on Your Well-Prepared Career GoalsBefore selecting a newcareer, you need to clearly set out your new career goals. For example, millions of Americans between the ages of 44 and 70 are looking for encore careers. These are second careers thatcombine personal meaning, social impact, and, levels of income that are consistent with or higher than a persons income in their previous career. Younger career-changers may also be looking for such encore careers, or they may be driven by desires likeincreased income, job satisfaction and engagement, and employability.Once you are crystal clear on your career goals, you can go about choosing a new career path that best aligns with behauptung goals.3. Beware Industries and Professions Where Jobs Are in Terminal DeclineWe live in volatile times Globalization and increasing automation mean that many industries will experiencemassive reductions jobs over the next 10-20 years. The Occupational Outlook Handbook provided by the U.S. Bureauof Labor Statisticsprovides forecasts about declining and rising industries over the next decade. A recent Oxford Martin School studysimilarly surveys thejobs that are most vulnerable to automation in the coming years. I highly suggest career-changers spend some time studying ansicht resources to ensure that the new careers they choose dont disappear a few years down the road.4. Select a Career path Where There Jobs and Salaries Are Expected to GrowRelated to the previous tip, career-changers should try to get into career paths where the escalator is going up, not down. You can find out which professions have the most growth potential using the sources presented above.5. Leverage Your ConnectionsChang ing careers isnt easy, but career-changers do have at least one advantage over first-timers who are new to the working world their networks. Most career-changers have likely built powerful networks of high-level contacts over the course of their first careers. They can leverage these networks to find new opportunities in new career paths.Remember, studies show that candidates who are referred to an employer are much more likely to be called to interview and offered a job. As a career-changer, your personal and professional is the secret weapon that can give you an edge over those who are just starting out. Use it.6. Obtaina Relevant Certification to Boost Your CV and Demonstrate Commitment.A great way to prepare yourself for your new career and to show potential employers that you are committed to your second career path is to obtain a relevant certification via night school or online learning. Taking the time and effort to engage in professional developmentwillprove to employers th at you are dedicated and ready to give your new career all that you have. Employers will look favorably on this, and youll be more likely to land interviews and jobs as a result.-Making a career change can be difficult, but its also increasingly becoming the norm. Starting a second career isnt the same as starting your first, but if you follow these tips, youll position yourself for success on your new professional path.

Salary Requirements

Salary RequirementsSalary RequirementsResearch the going rate for your target job now so youre prepared to answer salary requirement questions during the interview.Q When asked about my salary requirements, I never know what to say. If I say a low figure, they have no reason to offer more money. If I give a figure thats too high, they may disregard me as a candidate. Whats the right response? Deb H.A The first rule of salary negotiation is to avoid discussing numbers until the company has extended an offer. This is when you have the most power to negotiate. But as any job seeker will tell you, this is no simple feat. Recruiters typically try to pull this information out of you as early as the initial phone screen, if they didnt already request your salary requirements as part of the application process. Here are a couple phrases you can use (courtesy of Jack Chapman, author of the book How to Make $1000 a Minute ) to deflect questions about your salary requirementsIm koranvers we can come to a good salary agreement if Im the right person for the job, so lets first agree on whether I am.I have some idea of the market, but for a moment lets start with your range. What do you have budgeted for the position? You can try to deflect the questions upfront once, maybe twice, but if the recruiter is insistent, youll need to be prepared with some figures.First things first, do your research. Use Ladders Job Market Guide and Companies pages to discover the going rate for your targeted job with respect to your relevant years of experience and educational background, as well as the industry and geographic location of the jobs youre targeting. You can start by looking up how your current role compares to the market rate, and then also change some of the variables to match those of the companies youre applying to. If the roles you are targeting are in different industries or locations, or the size of the company is very different, this could have an impact on what salary you ca n expect to make.Once youve done the research, come up with three numbersWhats the ideal dollar amount you want (and still have the recruiter take you seriously)? What dollar amount (given the going rate) is reasonable and would still make you happy? What is the lowest dollar amount youd accept? These three numbers make up the compensation range that is in alignment with the going rate for your targeted role, and that would make you happy. If youre forced to state your salary requirements upfront, use the researched number you found to be the fair market value (the same goes for an online application that demands a numeric response).Remember, your value to a prospective employer does not go down just because times are tough. Good employees are even more important to the success of an organization in a challenging economic environment. You just need to be able to explain why youre worth what youre asking for based on your research of the market and the value you can bring to the table.A gain, the most important thing you can do is delay the compensation conversation as long as humanly possible so you have time to build a rapport with your interviewers monetize what you can do, and how you can personally affect the bottom line at the company and move them from what Chapman describes as the budget state of mind (How much is this person going to cost us?) to the judge it mindset (We need this person Shed be such a great asset to the company how can we get her to join us?).Click on the following link to access Ladders Salary QA Series with Jack Chapman.

How to talk to working moms The dos and donts

How to talk to working moms The do's and don'ts How to talk to working moms The do's and don'ts I run my own law firm, and I’m a mother of two. Both of these aspects of my life are central to my identity. I have questioned whether my children would be better off if I were home full time. However, I love the highs and lows of a courtroom practice, and I feel honored to help my clients through incredibly difficult periods in their lives. I know the fulfillment from my work makes me a better mom when I am with my children. And, because my work affects my clients’ children, I know I am better at my job because I have children.

Here are the beauty and health benefits of biotin

Here are the beauty and health benefits of biotin Here are the beauty and health benefits of biotin Unless you’ve been MIA for the past few years, you know that biotin is the holy grail for fabulous hair, nails, and skin. Why? Your hair, skin, and nails are made up of a protein called  keratin  (yes, like the  semi-permanent  hair straightening treatment  you get to tame your locks). Biotin helps to improve your keratin levels, and as a result, strengthens your hair, skin, and nails. Research is  limited  on the success of taking biotin, but from the countless celebrities who promote biotin-rich gummies (or start feuds over them- I’m talking to you,  James and Tati) and from my own friends’ personal experiences, it can work. Want long locks? Biotin. Nails that won’t break? Biotin. Hydrated and acne-free skin? Biotin. Or so we’ve been told by the beauty industry. But there’s surely a catch, right? We can’t have nice things without consequences, RIGHT?? Ugh, you know the world too well. Of course, there is.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipb oard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! What’s the catch?Recent research has shown that biotin can skew medical tests. Uhh, what? The  FDA  warns that taking an excess of biotin, also known as B7, can cause tests to come back falsely negative or positive. In a  recent statement, the FDA said that there has been “an increase in the number of reported adverse events [injuries associated with medical care]  related to biotin interference with lab tests.” Yikes. Some  common tests  that can be impacted by your biotin pills and cause possible misdiagnoses include troponin (diagnose heart attacks), vitamin D levels, thyroid and other hormone tests, such as parathyroid hormone and  cortisol. The recommended dose for biotin is 30 micrograms, but many of the pills on the market range from 5,000 to 10,000 micrograms. For example, the beloved  SugarBearHair gummies contain 5,000 micrograms of biotin, 1667% of your daily recommended dose. That’s no t a typo- that is way more than you need every day. But, despite the potential test complications, taking that much Biotin all the time doesn’t necessarily pose an immediate health risk. Since biotin is a water-soluble vitamin (meaning you pee out any excess of the vitamin in your system), overdosing is unlikely, according to  Health Line. TG for small miracles. So should I stop taking my gummies?Wow, don’t do anything drastic. While biotin  can  skew  some  medical results, it doesn’t mean it will skew  all  of them. The best thing to do? Tell your doc that you’re taking biotin (and any other meds or vitamins) before you get any testing done. This way, they can advise you on if you need to stop taking the pills for a period of time before getting bloodwork or to keep it in mind when they analyze your results. If you want hair that makes people think you bought it, and you feel like the supplements are helping,  and  your doctor is fully aware and on board,  stick to taking t he pills. If you’re now worried about taking biotin (sorry), there are tons of foods to help you get your daily dose in. Almonds, egg yolks, spinach, and sweet potatoes are just a few foods that can help with your locks. This article originally appeared on Betches Lifestyle.

Pros and Cons of CAD

Pros and Cons of CAD Pros and Cons of CAD Pros and Cons of CAD An informal poll by Mechanical Engineering of approximately 25 engineers revealed that they have mixed feelings about CAD. Their comments inspired us to ask three prominent CAD users what they perceive to be the positives and negatives of the software today. All three agreed that CADs ease of use is both its best quality and its greatest drawback. Less experienced engineers can create designs that look perfectly manufacturable on screen, but cant actually be made. For instance, CAD allows users to simply mate two parts. They snuggle right up against each other, said William Durfee, a professor of mechanical engineering and director of the design education department at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. In real life, theyd need to be welded, or adhesively bonded, or fastened with some type of fastenerits easy to forget that on the screen. With today's surfacing and other improved computer-aided design tools, engineers can more easily depict curved surfaces.Gordon Lewis, a principal at DaTuM 3D, a product-development company, agreed. We have customers come in here and say, My brothers grandson did this design for mecan you guys make it? We have to say, Sorry. It cant be built. The flip side is that the software can make a bad engineer a good one. Youre less likely to make a bad part than you were before, says Bernhard Bettig, a professor of mechanical engineering at Michigan Technological University. The same systems that give their less-experienced colleagues a leg up, give veteran engineers a bedrock technology to support their advanced designs. Aware of how a design will be made and assembled, theyre much less likely to come up with a part or product that faces trouble on the manufacturing side. As they create a design, they run a movie in their head about how it could be made, Durfee said. And then there are the designs themselves. In the early days, everybody tried to use CAD tools like theyd used their drawing boards. They couldnt do it because CAD had such restrictions, Lewis said. Twenty years ago, you saw designs that were very boxy because of the limitation of the tools. Today, we see free-flowing shapes, contours, and blended angles. CAD has helped change mouse shape. The yellow box mouse (above) is from a mid-1960s Xerox Alto II XM computer. A contemporary mouse (below) shows the curved surfaces CAD design allows.Other novices, frustrated because they cant make such shapes, fall into a pattern of using the patterns that are easiest to carry out in CAD. You can whip up a rectangle with round things on it in 20 seconds, because those buttons are right there, Durfee said. CAD has evolved so its easier to make a double-curved surface than five years ago, but itll be a while before itll be truly easy to do. Thats why some engineers still sculpt a design in clay before bringing it into CAD. And digital design is slower than sketching. You fire up the CAD application and three minutes later youre making a rectangle. Twenty minutes later, youre coming up with your first idea, Durfee said. A good designer could come up with 100 fledgling ideas in that time. Durfee lauds the ease of documentation. An engineer fresh from a brainstorming session may have 100 ideas. Once CAD files, theyre automatically archived and documented. Once youve created something in a CAD package, youve committed it to a paper trail, Durfee said. Thats huge in things like medical design, where you have to track the process from day one. The average engineer isnt that excited about documentation, so its nice to have a system that does it for him. Drawbacks aside, Durfee, Bettig, and Lewis agreed that its an exciting time for CAD. Whenever hes frustrated by the limitations of the software, Lewis remembers his early days in industry. I can make and cost out anything you want to build, all on my laptop, he said. Its really Buck Rogers. [Adapted from Pros and Cons of CAD, by Jean Thilmany, Associate Editor, Mechanical Engineering, September 2006.] Twenty years ago, you saw designs that were very boxy because of the limitation of the tools. Today, we see free-flowing shapes, contours, and blended angles.Gordon Lewis, a principal at DaTuM 3D

Learn how to Handle Distracting Coworkers

Learn how to Handle Distracting Coworkers Learn how to Handle Distracting Coworkers One way to potentially scare of the less assertive (read: intrusive) of the coworker bunch is simply to wear a pair of headphones. Whether or not you are actually listening to music, the perception of you in your own world may aid in adding a subtle “Do Not Disturb” sign to your cubicle wall. For the purposes of ridding yourself of unwanted visitors, it is probably more useful to wear highly visible (though not necessarily bulky) headphones so that you are more obvious. Earbuds may be easily overlooked, or even ignored, by anyone seeking your attention. If your workplace doesn’t allow for even the appearance of listening to music at your desk, or you’d just prefer not to wear a pair of headphones all day, you may want to consider developing a few trigger phrases or conversation “traps” to end coworker interactions through the use of language: During particularly busy times, let the intruder know that you are pleased that they stopped because it has given you the opportunity to ask him or her to help you catch up on tasks that you wouldn’t otherwise complete due to your increased workload. Cash in a favor and send them away with work to do. Not only can this potentially help you achieve more work but also sends a message that if a coworker wishes to interrupt you during peak hours they can expect to be solicited for help. Focus your conversation topics on subjects that you know your coworker knows little about or dislikes. While you may still be stuck participating in a conversation, there is a good chance that it will be much more brief than if you engaged your colleague in a topic that he or she loves. In a similar vein, explicitly state to your coworker that you are not interested in whatever it is that he or she is talking about. This is sure to shorten the conversation because it will devolve into a one-sided conversation of explaining why the initial conversation topic is interesting to begin with. And odds are that after enough attempts at conversing with an uninterested person, he or she will look elsewhere to find two-sided conversations. If the passive-aggressive nature of these strategies is too much of a turn off for your personality, you can always simply be up front with your desire to be left alone. Being assertive doesn’t require that you be rude or mean. It’s just a matter of remaining calm, composed, and polite while you explain to the person that it is important that you be left alone to focus on your work.

5 Popular Resume Tips You SHOULDNT Follow

5 Popular Resume Tips You SHOULDNT Follow 5 Popular Resume Tips You SHOULDNT Follow Most resume tip resources are primarily made up of common sense and tried-and-true methods, but there are a few pieces of advice out there that could hurt more than they help.  Use caution when it comes to these 5 resume tips: Resume Tip 1: Hide gaps or short-term gigs in your resume by removing exact dates from your experience Some advise to cover up gaps in your experience or short-lived jobs by reformatting the dates on your resume. For example, a January-to-September gap like this: WXYZ Company, September 2017-Present ABCD Company, March 2015-January 2017 Becomes: WXYZ Company, 2017-Present ABCD Company, 2015-2017 The gap magically disappears. Similarly, for a single short-term position,  October 2016-January 2017 becomes 2016-2017. Alternatively, some advise to only list the duration of employment (e.g. Microsoft 4 years, 2 months) to hide gaps or protect against age discrimination. Why it seems like a good idea: Recruiters could see a gap in your resume or a short-lived job as a major red flag. Instead of hearing you out, they could opt to move on to other candidates. By disguising these gaps and bumps in the road with formatting tricks, you might fool the recruiter and buy enough time to get them hooked on your skillset. Why it isnt:  One, a recruiter will eventually catch on and dock you for being sneaky. Two,  the applicant tracking system  (ATS) that parses your resume into a searchable candidate profile could fail to make sense of your formatting, creating even bigger problems. The popular ATS  iCIMS, for example, defaults year-only dates to January 1st, so the job you labeled 2017-2017 becomes January 1, 2017-January 1, 2017. The job you worked between November 2016 and December 2017 but labeled as 2016-2017 becomes January 1, 2016-January 1, 2017. This could turn your work history into a puzzle the recruiter doesnt have time to piece together. It could also  come back to bite you if there are any automated filters enabled that calculate and rate you based on experience levels. Even worse, the year-only format could cause an ATS to fail to recognize the experience altogether, excluding it from search or ranking algorithms, especially if its in the 4 years, 2 months format. What you should do instead:  Be honest. Masking a gap or job hopping concern could, in theory, help get your foot in the door, but recruiters and hiring managers will uncover the truth at some point in the hiring process. They wont be happy to learn about a potential problem after theyve already invested the time to meet you. Instead, use conventional formatting and explain your gaps as honestly as you can in your cover letter.  Be prepared to talk about it if you make it to an interview. Remove short-term jobs from your resume that arent strengthening your candidacy, or label short-term jobs with (Temporary), (Seasonal), (Contract), (Freelance) etc. Resume Tip 2: Use a Functional Resume Along the same lines, the functional resume format  is a popular option among career changers and people with gaps in their resume.  This format designates two-thirds of the page to accomplishments and transferable skills before briefly listing the actual work history at the bottom. Functional Resume Template Example. Click to Enlarge. Download docx. Why it seems like a good idea:  By dedicating your resumes prime real estate to your most attractive skills and accomplishments, the recruiter might pay less attention to your unconventional work history or gaps in your resume. Why it isnt: “Recruiters hate the functional resume,” a veteran recruiter told Jobscan. Recruiters arent stupid. They know that youre using a functional resume to try and hide shortcomings on your resume. If anything, a functional resume draws more attention to whatever it is youre hiding because the format itself is a red flag. Recruiters cant assign proper value to skills or accomplishments without context, so if they bother at all with your functional resume, the first thing theyre going to do is dig deeper.  Additionally, a functional resume format is highly unlikely to play nice with an ATS. “I’ve seen plenty of people that try to use a functional resume and I tell them, ‘You’re just shooting yourself in the foot,' concluded the recruiter. What you should do instead:  If a traditional reverse-chronological resume format isnt for you, try instead the hybrid resume format. More and more resumes are moving in this direction. You can add a few top skills and/or achievements at the top of the resume but still have room to validate them with detailed work experience. Recruiters and online application systems alike are more receptive to this format. Hybrid Resume Template. Click to Enlarge. Download .docx Resume Tip 3: Beat applicant tracking systems by using a word cloud tool Using a word cloud to beat ATS algorithms is an extremely popular resume hack these days. These systems either analyze your resume contents and compare it to whats in the job description or parse your resume to make it searchable for recruiters. Why it seems like a good idea:  Running the job description through a word cloud tool  like TagCrowd or WordItOut will reveal which words appear most frequently and, in theory, are most important to the hiring company. Adding these words to your resume should increase your chances of making it through the ATS. Why it isnt:  The logic behind this approach is sound but word cloud tools leave a lot to be desired as a job search tool. They arent intelligent enough to recognize what is and isnt an actual skill, put together multi-word phrases, or ignore unhelpful filler words. This leaves you to sort through a great deal of noise in order to make the right changes to your resume. What you should do instead:  Jobscan not only calculates the frequency of words in a job description, it intelligently categorizes actual skills from the job description, compares them to whats in your resume, and breaks it all down into an easy-to-read report. Resume Tip 4: Use hidden keywords to beat applicant tracking systems Making sure your resume is optimized for and compliant with ATS is a savvy and above-board job search technique. Trying to hack or cheat the system by secretly stuffing your resume with skills you dont possess is an easily discoverable tactic that will land you on a recruiters bad side. In the Reddit community Unethical Pro Tips, a user suggested hiding the entire job description in your resume with white text while another suggested using Jobscan to figure out which keywords you should secretly stuff into your resume. Why it seems like a good idea: Its true that these techniques could manipulate an applicant tracking systems ranking or search algorithm to make you appear to be a great match for the job. Why it isnt:  Many top applicant tracking systems parse your resume into a candidate profile, meaning that recruiters are looking at plain text fields instead of the resume you uploaded. A pasted job description would stand out like a sore thumb. Furthermore, many ATS highlight search terms so that recruiters can see the context of the keyword. Heres an example of what that looks like for an applicant who tried to secretly stuff the keyword accounting into their resume through  Taleo. An applicant profile in Taleo, the most commonly used ATS. This applicant tried to beat the system using the hidden text method (“Accounting Accounting…”), but it’s easy to spot once the resume text has been parsed into the system. What you should do instead: Optimizing your resume with a tool like Jobscan isnt about tricking the system. Its about making sure your resume isnt missing anything and works in sync with the system. Add missing skills and keywords you actually possess into your resume as naturally as possible.  Resume Tip 5: Always upload your resume as a PDF Online applicant tracking systems accept a variety of file types when it comes to uploading your resume. Taleo, for example, accepts RTF, DOC, DOCX, CSV, TXT, PDF, and several other file formats. No matter whats available, some people recommend  always uploading a PDF. Why it seems like a good idea:  When it comes to other file types, the formatting can thrown out of whack depending in which word processor, browser, or cloud app its opened. By uploading a PDF, you lower the risk of a formatting error making your resume appear unprofessional. A PDF is more visually stable and will display your resume exactly how you designed it. Why it isnt: If youre emailing your resume directly to a hiring manager, a PDF is a great way to go. However, if youre uploading your resume into an ATS that automatically pulls information from your resume into an applicant profile, a PDFs contents is slightly less likely to be parsed correctly. This means that your application might be excluded from some search results or might not rank as well as it otherwise could. What you should do instead:  By using a standard text-based format like DOC or DOCX and keeping your formatting simple, the system is more likely to understand and correctly parse your information, giving you the best chance possible to be a top result in an ATS.

This simple strategy decreases anxiety and fear

This simple strategy decreases anxiety and fear This simple strategy decreases anxiety and fear The future is filled with unknowns. There is so much uncertainty, not only regarding personal issues, but also global and political issues. This uncertainty often leads to worry.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! Some estimate that people spend  nearly six years  of their lives worrying about the future. Ironically,  a primary regret  in older people’s lives was the time they spent worrying, according to Cornell professor Karl Pillimer, who interviewed over 1,200 elderly people.Over and over Pillimer heard the same thing.I wish I hadn’t spent so much of my life worrying. For instance, John Alonzo, aged 83, said, “Don’t believe that worrying will solve or help anything. It won’t. So stop it.”  Similarly, James Huang, aged 87, stated:Why? I ask myself. What possible difference did it make that I kept my mind on every little thing that might go wrong? When I realized tha t it made no difference at all, I experienced a freedom that’s hard to describe. My life lesson is this: Turn yourself from frittering away the day worrying about what comes next and let everything else that you love and enjoy move in. From the vantage point of being near-death, life  seems very short.  Time is a precious and very finite resource. The longer you live, the more you realize your time on this beautiful planet is brief. The research is clear, worrying often leads to  long-term health consequences, including cardiovascular disease and other chronic conditions. Not surprisingly, research has found that people with an  â€œexternal locus of control”  spend much more time worrying than those with an internal locus of control. Your locus of control is what you believe dictates the course of your life.External or internal. Either you’re in control of your life or something else is.If something else is, you should be worried. After all, there’s nothing you can do about it.Conversely, when you have an internal locus of control, you proactively take care of the situation. You don’t wait for life to come to you. You act, not react.Worrying doesn’t solve your problems. Actually, when you worry, you perform worse. Your working memory (short-term), which should be focused on the task, is being used up worrying.Worrying is a form of self-inflicted torture.Write it  DownSeveral research studies have found that  writing down  what you’re worried about can calm you down. There are two separate groups of researchers who have found that writing reduces your worries about the future. However, these groups prescribe different things to write  about.Researchers at University of Colorado have found that writing about your personal values, such as family and friends, helps you perform better. They call this “values affirmation.” According to the researchers,  â€œIt reminds [you] what [you] stand for.”Conversely, researchers at The University of Chicago have found that having students write directly about their concerns helps reduce their worrying. According to Dr. Beilock at U. of Chicago,  â€œWhen [you] write, [you] might reappraise the situation?- ?thinking about what has to be done, rat her than what [you] might lose.”The cool part is, both “interventions” work. I’ve personally done a blend of both for a long time without being aware of the scientific findings to back it.If I’m about to give a public speech, or if I’m worrying about anything in particular, I write down the things that are important to me and the things I’m worrying about. It puts things into proper perspective, helping me realize that  it doesn’t really matter.  Everything is going to be okay.Burn ItAnother interesting approach, less scientifically-validated, is writing down what you’re worried about and then  burning the piece of paper.  Some call this practice “Write and Burn,” others call it “Burning Release.”Thinking about what you’re worried about brings your emotions to the surface. While you write, you re-frame your thinking toward those worries. Burning what you’ve written down is a helpful way of  â€œletting go.”Write down what you’re worried about.Acknowl edge it.Burn it.Let it go.Keep moving forward.Pain is Inevitable, Suffering is  Optional“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”?- ?Viktor FranklThe sensation of fear or concern is actually highly beneficial. It reflects the body responding to a stimulus, directing where you should be paying attention. However, these sensations are meant to be learned from and  responded to, not dwelt in.Said Ryan Holiday in  The Obstacle is the Way,  â€œThere is no good or bad without us, there is only perception. There is the event itself and the story we tell ourselves about what it means.” Worrying is when you take something and atatch negative emotions and meaning to it, which leads to  unnecessary suffering.Looking Back, You’ll Regret  Worrying“What great thing would you attempt if you knew you could not fail?”?- ?Robert H. SchullerWorrying is generally focused on something uncertain about the future, like passing a test. Once you’ve finished or completed what you were previously worried about, you see it with  new eyes. Now that you’ve done it, you understand it. There’s nothing to worry about. You know the process. You’ve watched yourself do it, so it’s reasonable to believe you could do it again if necessary. But if you haven’t yet done something, you don’t usually have that level of confidence and understanding. But could you?You absolutely can. This is what Tony Robbins calls  â€œresolve.”  To have resolve means “It’s done,” even before you’ve actually done it. You’ve  decided  you are going to do something, you’re  committed  to it for the long-haul, and in your mind, it’s  already a done-deal.You are resolved. It is finished.Hence, Ralph Waldo Emerson wisely stated,  â€œOnce you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.”Get out of your head, that’s where worrying will keep you.Un-clench yourself.Tak e a few breaths.Quit torturing yourself (and those around you). You are going to make it through this. You mid as well enjoy it.How I Turned $25,000 Into $374,592 In Less Than 6  MonthsI’ve created a free training that will teach you how to become world-class and successful at anything you choose.Access the free training  here  now! This article first appeared on Medium.  You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

You Can Consciously Transform Your Culture

You Can Consciously Transform Your Culture You Can Consciously Transform Your Culture Your corporate culture has a significant impact on whether or not your company accomplishes its most significant goals. You may need to tweak the culture, or you may need a complete culture overhaul.  Although changing your organizational culture can feel like rolling rocks uphill, it will likely result in increased growth and revenue. Organizational cultures form over years of interaction among participants in the organization. It usually takes a significant event for people to consider culture change, such as flirting with bankruptcy, a significant loss of sales and customers, a new CEO with a different outlook and agenda, or losing $1 million. Steps in Organizational Culture Change Three major steps are involved in changing an organizations culture. Understand your current culture.Decide where your organization wants to go, define its strategic direction, and decide what the organizational culture should look like. What vision does the organization have for its future, and how must the culture change  to accomplish that vision? The individuals in the organization must decide to change their behavior to create the desired organizational culture. This is the hardest step in culture change. Plan the Desired Organizational Culture Develop a picture of your organizations desired future. What does the organization want to create? How will this benefit your employees and the organizations other stakeholders? Examine your mission, vision, and values for both the strategic and the value-based components of the organization. Your management team needs to answer questions such as: What are the five most important values you would like to see represented in your organizational culture? Are these values compatible with your current organizational culture? Do they exist now? If not, why not? If they are so important, why arent you attaining these values? Are your mission, vision, and values clearly articulated and disseminated so that employees have a clear understanding of the organizations direction and where they fit within it?What cultural elements support the success of your organization, and what elements of the current organizational culture need to change? Perhaps your team decides that you spend too much time agreeing with each other rather than challenging potentially incorrect forecasts and assumptions of fellow team members. Or perhaps key management leaders spend most of their time with team members individually and promote individual agendas to the detriment of the cohesive functioning of the whole group. Consciously identify the cultural implements and decide to change them. Change the Organizational Culture Knowing what the desired organizational culture looks like is not enough. Organizations must create plans to ensure that the desired organizational culture becomes a reality. The two most important elements for creating organizational cultural change are executive support and training. Executive Support Executives must support cultural change in ways beyond verbal assent. They must show support  for cultural change by changing their own behaviors. Provide Training Culture change depends on behavior and belief change. Members of the organization must clearly understand what is expected of them and how to actually do the new behaviors. Use training to communicate expectations and new behaviors. Mentoring will also help employees learn and change. Additional Ways to Change the Organizational Culture Communication, employee involvement, and a willingness to learn and adapt are keys to keeping organizational change on track. Create value and belief statements Ask employee focus groups to put the companys mission, vision, and values into words that state the impact on each employees job. For one job, the employee stated, I live the value of quality patient care by listening attentively whenever a patient speaks. This exercise gives all employees a common understanding of the desired culture that actually reflects the actions they must commit to on their jobs. Practice effective communication Keeping all employees informed about the organizational culture change process ensures commitment and success. Telling employees what is expected of them is critical for effective organizational culture change. Review organizational structure You may need to change the physical structure of the company to align with the desired organizational culture. For example, a small company with four distinct business units competing for a product, customers, and internal support resources may not support an effective organizational culture and the overall success of the business. Consider moving employees and teams You want to create the sense of cohesion and camaraderie among groups that must work together to serve customers. So, to accomplish this closeness, you will want to move people who must work closely together into the same space. Redesign your approach to rewards and recognition  You will likely need to change the reward system to encourage behaviors vital to the desired organizational culture. For example, if you want to encourage employees to work as cohesive teams, you must reward them for their success as team players. Review all work systems Make sure systems such as employee promotions, pay practices, performance management, and employee selection align with the desired culture. For example, you cannot just reward individual performance if your new organizational culture values teamwork. A senior leaders bonus should also be based on  playing well with others  on the leadership team to accomplish your organizational goals. It is more difficult to change the culture of an existing organization than to  create a culture  in a  brand-new organization or team. When an organizational culture is already established, people must unlearn the old values, assumptions, and behaviors before they can learn the new ones. But with time, commitment, planning, and proper execution, you can change your organizational culture to support the accomplishment of key your business goals and needed outcomes. Yes, you can.

How Get an Agent as an Actor, Writer, or Director

How Get an Agent as an Actor, Writer, or Director How Get an Agent as an Actor, Writer, or Director Getting an agent can seem like an impossible task, but its not as difficult as you might think. Agents are an important part of your potential success in the creative realm, but they arent the end all be all. That said, how do you go about getting one? Depending on whether you are an actor, writer or director, the process of getting an agent is a bit different for each vocation. But no matter what you wish to be, the trick to getting an agent, however, is that you usually need to make most of the effort. Talent Agents for Actors For actors, the type of agent you need is called a talent agent. That might seem obvious, but there are a number of different types of talent agents depending on what type of work youre looking for. You want to start by finding someone who specializes in the area that youre hoping to break into. A talent agent that specializes in the film is very different from the one who specializes in commercials. So, begin by determining which direction is best suited to you. Talent agents usually find their clients in one of three ways: 1) they are referrals from other people; 2) they are people they sought out (most often established actors that were stolen from other agencies); or 3) by discovering them through a talent showcase, student film or other completed work. Does this mean that you wont ever be discovered by working as a waitress at a Hollywood industry hangout? No, but your chances are markedly decreased if this is the only effort you make. Too many actors think that an agent will choose to represent them, simply because they have an amazing headshot. True, a good headshot might give you the slightest edge toward getting a meeting, but more often than not, it ends up in the trash. One quick note about headshots: you want to be sure that no matter what, you look as close to your headshot as possible. If youve gained or lost weight, changed your hairstyle, or simply aged a few years, nothing will turn off a casting agent faster than an inaccurate photo representation of you. Pay the extra money and update them as you need to. The trick to getting a good talent agent is to be sure that you put yourself in a place to get discovered. That means, find work on your own. That could mean anything from doing talent showcases to student films to whatever else you can find. If you live in Los Angeles or New York, and even if you dont, you should subscribe to Back Stage West (either the magazine or the website), as this is an excellent resource for aspiring actors to find student and low-budget movies that are casting and are more likely to consider green actors. Also, consider checking out Craigslist.com. Its surprising how many low budget films advertise there looking for casting potentials. Be careful choosing this route, however, as a lot of seemingly legitimate ads may not be legitimate. Be aware of anyone who wants to charge you money for their representation services. Agents rep their clients for free and only get paid when they get their clients work. Stay as far away from these types as you can. Literary Agent for Writers With writing, again its very important that you first determine what type of writing you wish to do. Are you planning on becoming a feature writer (movies), television writer, or a novelist? (If you are in fact planning on becoming a novelist, know that much of what follows will not apply to you. This section will focus on film and TV writers.) Once youve decided what type of writing you wish to specialize in, now you can start the process of getting an agent. The first thing you need to have is some sort of written material. After all, you cant really call yourself a writer if you dont have a body of work that represents what youre capable of. So, be sure to have either a spec script (or two) if you wish to be a TV writer or a feature spec if you wish to write for film. Once you have these materials in hand, you cant just blindly submit them to agencies and then hope that theyll read your script. This is when your networking skills become key. You will want to be sure to let all of your friends and co-workers know that you hope to break into Hollywood as a writer and that youre in the market for an agent. Chances are someone will know someone who will know someone who will know someone that can get your material in front of an agent. Literary agents are, for the most part, pretty intelligent people who are always looking for good material written by good writers. After all, they all want to take credit for finding the next David E. Kelly or Aaron Sorkin- and whos to say thats not you? If they read your stuff and like it, chances are theyll seek you out. The hard part is getting your material in front of these people. So, that means you have to network, network, network, and network some more. One thing you need to be aware of however is that you will likely just have one chance to make an impression on an agent. They are very busy people who arent likely to give writers a couple of chances to impress them. So, only submit your material when its at its very best. That means everything from making sure your dialogue, story structure, and characters are top notch, to making sure you have proofread your script for typos. Dont spend a lot of time on your cover. Your material should look like a script. Plain, white, three-hole paper bound with brass script brands. Dont bind it, put a fancy cover on it, and never put any other information on it other than the title, author, and your contact information. Anything else and people reading it will know youre an amateur. Agents for Directors For potential  directors, getting an agent is actually not all that difficult (if youre talented). If youre a legitimate director, meaning youve actually directed something that you can send out as material, many agents will be willing to add you to their roster to see whether or not your work sparks with the executives they deal with. Agents that represent directors learn the type of genre and tone that their existing directors are capable of directing and will usually seek out those projects that suit those needs. So, the trick here is to become a part of that list. You need to start this process by first compiling a  Directors Reel. Your reel should have snippets of everything youve directed to date so that anyone watching it will see that you have the following qualifications: Talent: Talent with regard to directing means you need to showcase your abilities to find certain types of shots, get the most out of your actors and the ability to put your own visual spin (or voice) on whatever the subject matter might be.Technical Skills: You need to show that you can get the shot coverage you need to effectively tell a story as well as the ability to direct the editing process to achieve complete and well-rounded scenes.Proper Tone: If youre putting yourself out there as a comedy director, but you cant visually relate a scripted joke, then you might not be well suited for your job of choice. Your reel needs to showcase both the type of work youre capable of as well as the voice you use to show it. One important thing to remember when making your directors reel is to be sure that you dont overload it. Simply add those pieces of material that best showcase your directing talents and keep the entire reel under 5 minutes if possible. If you wish to include full episodes or movies, be sure to do so after your initial five-minute sample. Anything longer and chances  are  good there will be few if any executives and producers who will watch the entire thing and not get to the parts you want them to see. Keep in mind that getting an agent is not the impossible task it can often seem to be. You need to have extreme patience during this process, but that doesnt mean that you sit around waiting for an agent to suddenly discover you and your talents. Get out there and show off what you do and let the agents come and find you.
